Regent Park Community Centre

402 Shuter St, Toronto, ON

49 free sessions

Regent Park Community Centre is free — every City-run drop-in and registered program in it costs nothing. It opened at 402 Shuter Street in February 2016, built to replace the two older centres the revitalisation took down. The City put $22.1 million into it, with $400,000 from the school board, for about 59,000 square feet designed by CS&P Architects. The free-centre designation dates from 1999 and applies to neighbourhoods with high levels of low income; here it covers every age group.

Its unusual feature is what it is attached to. The centre is physically joined to Nelson Mandela Park Public School at both the north and south ends, so children move between classrooms and gym without going outside — rare among Toronto community centres, and a consequence of building both at once rather than retrofitting either.

Because it replaced two buildings, the range under one roof is wider than most: a double gymnasium with an indoor track above it, a weight room, a climbing wall, a dance studio, a teaching kitchen, a rooftop garden, youth and older-adult rooms, a child care centre and an employment office.

There is no pool here. Swimming in Regent Park lives a few blocks away at the Pam McConnell Aquatic Centre on Dundas Street East, a separate building — so if you came for lane swim, that is the address you want.
